The progress of this type of work is slow, hence the long hiatus, however, a lot of new data have been collected regarding Fender amplifiers, including production numbers. Advances have been made with regards to the production of tolex amps and it appears that much of this information can be applied to late s tweed amps as well. In addition, the dating-by-serial number tables have been revised and are more accurate. The bad news is that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done on the silverface amps. Unfortunately, there is some sad news to report as well. Fellow Fender amp researcher, Greg Huntington, passed away June 5, after losing his battle with cancer. Greg kept his illness very private, even from this author. His passing is a great loss to this research team and the Fender amp aficionado community in general. Greg was passionate about Fender amps and his knowledge, insight and humor will be missed very much. Paul Linden has volunteered to fill in for Greg.

History[ edit ] V. Squier Company [ edit ] Jerome Bonaparte Squier , a young English immigrant who arrived in Battle Creek, Michigan , in the latter part of the 19th century, was a farmer and shoemaker who had learned the fine European art of violin making. He moved to Boston in , where he built and repaired violins with his son, Victor Carroll Squier.
To this day, their violins are noted for their exceptional varnishes, and they command high prices as fine examples of early U. Squier ranks among the best-known U. As his business grew, Squier moved the company to Lake Ave.
In past articles we’ve looked at classic Floyd songs like Echoes and Comfortably Numb, which both are favourites to many and the essence of David’s tone from two eras. Still, the song that brings out the enthusiastic grin on most of us is of course Dogs. For me it was what got me into.
This is exactly what the amp is made for, being played unmiked in in a gospel band in a seat church every Sunday. Warning nr 1 Weight. Warning nr 2 Volume and clean headroom. In a 50 year old vintage amp the condition of the speakers varies a lot. Beware of the weight, though. The plate voltage will increase a little when two of the tubes are removed. Ideally you should have the amp re-biased to not run the two remaining tubes too hard. But the delivered current is doubled with four tubes.
Hence, the power is also doubled.
Features one channel and two inputs; volume, bright, treble, treble expander, bass, bass expander, bright switch, deep switch, stand-by switch, pilot light for stand-by and operate. This amp was built to play larger halls and outdoor concerts. The lack of reverb was not a big issue as most live performances had acoustics full of reverberation halls, arenas. Peter Traynor built these things to stand up to road abuse, unlike a lot of vintage stuff.

The album was released on CD, LP and cassette remember those? As live albums mostly go it was no huge success but rather a nice souvenir for the fans. Abandoned live album The initial plans were to release the live album and film a year earlier. In early November , a show in Atlanta, USA was recorded and filmed but after seeing the result the band decided they needed more time to find their old form. It was a vice decision as the bootleg version of the show reveals a band that was clearly out of shape and sounded rather bad.
Some of the songs however, ended up as official B-sides and single versions, including On the Turning Away and One Slip. Watch the concert here.

Neville used the guitar with the Fruit Eating Bears. One was taken for the compilation CD. The other was taken in at Jackson studios Rickmansworth whilst recording tracks for the said album.
The V.C. Squier Company manufactured strings for violins, banjos, and was established in by Victor Carroll Squier in Battle Creek, , the company was acquired by , Squier became defunct as a manufacturer and a brand name for strings, as Fender opted to market its strings under the Fender brand name.
The source-date code on a pot is a 6 or 7 digit code impressed into the casing of the potentiometer. For speakers this code can be 5, 6, 7 or 8 digits long, and it’s ink-stamped or paint-stamped on the “bell housing” of the speaker. In either case, the code works the same. The first 3 digits on a pot, or the first 2, 3 or 4 digits on a speaker are the source or manufacturer code. The remaining 3 or 4 digits are the date code.
In 3 digit dates code, the 1st digit is the last digit of the year. On 4 digits date codes, the 1st and 2nd digits are the last two digits of the year.

Go to menu top I never heard anything better than a Fender if we’re talking about the big manufacturers. Later on, in the Guitar section, I’ll also talk about Standel and EchoSonic , but they’re produced in such small numbers that it’s fair to say they’ll only have historic interest to the most of us So As long as you get a tube Fender you’ll probably be on the right track, because they all sound pretty good.
It doesn’t have to be vintage at all, but they do look pretty cool. Actually I started out playing a vintage Vox AC 30 and it wasn’t bad at all.
The Fender Bassman is a bass amplifier introduced by Fender during Initially intended to amplify bass guitars, the 5B6 Bassman was used by musicians for other instrument amplification, including the electric guitar, harmonica, and pedal steel s being a popular and important amplifier in its own right, the Bassman also became the foundation on which.
I promise the tables will still be there after you finish reading. We also received a report of a tweed 5G12 Concert. The 5G12 Concert is the earliest version from very late and early so the existence of a tweed example, while extremely rare, is certainly plausible since Fender was making lots of tweed amps during the same time period.
Working at FMI — I was able to interview a fellow who wishes to remain anonymous who worked at Fender in in the amp department. Although his job was somewhat limited, his recollections provided some really fascinating insights to how the amps were built. For instance, he confirmed our assumption that the amp chassis were put into stock after being stamped with serial numbers and that the chassis were pulled from the stock bins randomly just as with Fender guitar neck plates.
The boss came around and said what we’d be building. The chassis weren’t used chronologically.

In Vinci and Arty , Vinci’s mother seems to think the same. She’s blunt about it, too. Is no one safe? Granted, this was during a time when Diana and Hippolyta were the only two Amazons left which strongly influenced how they were thinking. And of course, Hippolyta was so desperate for a daughter that she moved the gods into miraculously creating Diana.

The Riverside catalog of jazz is a rich heritage: The quality of label-pictures on the internet ranges from bad to worse, with the occasional gem, so not every release is covered, but particular attention is paid to labelography at changeover points. The variation in the shade of blue is of no significance: Riverside are mostly the same colour blue in real life, just not in photographs.
Print-runs of covers may or may not have matched pressing runs of vinyl so they may not match exactly, for other reasons. The West address later was set in one long horizontal line 1. LJC reader Diego had the good fortune to acquire this lovely example recently, and was kind enough to share it.

This resulted in the so-called lawsuit period. During this period, Ibanez produced guitars under the Mann name to avoid authorities in the United States and Canada. The company has produced its own guitar designs ever since. The late s and early s were an important period for the Ibanez brand. Most Ibanez guitars were made by the FujiGen guitar factory in Japan up until the mid- to late s, and from then on Ibanez guitars have also been made in other Asian countries such as Korea, China, and Indonesia.
Cimar and Starfield were guitar and bass brands owned by Hoshino Gakki.

Last update October I do not want to repeat the information that can be found there, but I felt since I do my own thing here with sound clips that a general guide to those effects is necessary, but I highly recommend you check out Gilmourish for a comprehensive guide to all of David Gilmour’s gear and an album by album gear guide. Below is a guide to the basic effects gear needed to create a typical David Gilmour lead tones as heard on Pink Floyd studio and live recordings.
I have used every one of these effects at one time or another. This is not a comprehensive list of every effect Gilmour ever used, but just a general guide for getting the tones. It goes without saying that you should use a Stratocaster type guitar with vintage style single coil pickups for the majority of Gilmour’s tones, and most importantly, learn to play in a similar style. A vintage style wah pedal, like a Vox Wah, can also be used for some very early Pink Floyd, such as the bird like screams you hear in the middle section of Echoes, and the wailing sounds heard on Is There Anybody Out There.
Additional pedals like a Digitech Whammy for Marooned and The Blue and a volume pedal can be used for certain songs. EMG-SA pickups were also key to the tones from this era. For David Gilmour tones from the On an Island era you need:
